"The FDP has had the great good luck that they aren't currently part of the federal government and they haven't been associated with the crisis," Dietmar Herz, a professor of political science at Erfurt University, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. "Partially as a result, the party has been able to develop an image of economic expertise." It couldn’t be clearer: No new taxes. Germany has decisively rejected the tired nostrums of the Social Democratic Party, which campaigned on raising taxes on the wealthy and was the junior partner of the Christian Democrats in a grand coalition during the past four years. On Saturday, 1 August 2009, a group of 60 odd "liberals" gathered at the YB Chavan Centre to mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of the party -- a political experiment that had dared to challenge Nehruvian socialism. Amidst those present were Captain GR Gopinath, the founder of Air Deccan, and Meera Sanyal, who contested the 2009 Lok Sabha poll as an Independent from Mumbai. Today, the Swatantra Party's symbol -- a white star on a powder-blue background -- may not stir political passions. But its free market liberal economy ideology propagated to "counteract the mindless acceptance by the country of socialist rhetoric which in reality was only a camouflage for statism," is thriving. DNA newspaper has report on the event. http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/report_a-unique-tribute-to-gayatri-devi_1279095 Read 0 Comments... >> |
